What Are the Ten Qirats?

The word Qira’at (قراءات) literally means “readings” and refers to the different authentic methods of reciting the Quran. These methods have been preserved through reliable chains of transmission dating back to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

The differences between the Qirats are not related to dialect or style, but rather involve slight variations in pronunciation, letters, and Harakat (vowel marks). These variations were revealed by Allah to accommodate the different Arab tribes at the time of the Prophet (ﷺ), much like how modern English has variations between British and American pronunciation.

These variations are authentic, divinely revealed, and do not affect the meaning of the verses.
